IGS POST 16 IN THE COMMUNITY

POST16 CHARITY ENRICHMENT (Small).jpg

  • VOLUNTARY
As part of the Personal Enrichment programme students are encouraged to participate in voluntary work during their time in the Sixth Form. This has included volunteering in local charity shops, nursing homes, the local medical patients’ council, local primary schools and Brownies. Students have 2 hours a fortnight available to pursue such an experience. There is also the opportunity to be an in-house volunteer whereby students are seconded to a department of their choice to assist in a variety of ways.
  • CHARITY
Post 16 students support many charities.  Every year we hold a ‘pink/blue day’ in order to raise money for male and female cancer charities.  Our students sell poppies and support local flag days in Ilkley.  In recent years we have raised an amazing £1,750 for Martin House Children’s Hospice, £1,000 for Yorkshire Air Ambulance and fundraised to hold our own ‘Jubilee’ party for the elderly in our community. More recently students have supported national campaigns for ‘Save the Children’.

SPORT

The school competes in both area and national sporting competitions in a variety of sports. During the year we hope to offer enrichment opportunities such as yoga or other physical activities to Year 12 students. We also offer students the opportunity to gain a qualification in Sport Leadership. Post 16 is not just about the academic – staying physically fit helps students in their quest for excellent grades and we encourage students to focus on their well-being as part of the Personal Enrichment Programme.

TRIPS

As a Post 16 student you will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of trips - from Iceland and CERN (Philosophy & Science), Geography trips to Cranedale, Skiing in Europe, Exchanges to Coutances, Theatre and Art Trips to London…the choice is enormous.  Our staff are committed to extra-curricular opportunities and Ilkley Grammar School prides itself on developing the whole student both academically and socially.

WORK EXPERIENCE

All students in Year 12/13 are encouraged to undertake work experience.  While there is time allocated for this, students are supported and directed towards appropriate placements.  In recent years students have undertaken work experience at the BBC in London, in Spain and at local hospitals and national companies. The possibilities are endless.

Our A Level Spanish students have been travelling to Spain for a week’s work experience in February for about 8 years.  Every year has been a total success with students returning fired with enthusiasm for their studies and with their love of Spain renewed.

Participants have travelled to a variety of locations in Spain including Gerona, Tarragona, Segovia and more recently Burgos.  Students have had the chance to work in a range of work placements, for example cafes, radio stations, schools, nurseries, record shops, hairdressing salons and restaurants, including the one famous for its roast suckling pig (much visited by Franco!)
