Personal Enrichment

All Year 12 and 13 students have allocated time. They can choose from a variety of activities, from sporting to helping in the school or wider community.

Post 16 students are encouraged to engage in leadership roles

There is an opportunity to help train or assist with training of staff and Key stage 3 and 4 Students in the skills of the digital world.
Becoming a member of the SLT is a great honour and is an opportunity to take part in leadership of the student experience.  Students have to formally apply for the position supported by sponsorship of member of staff. The opportunity to become Head Boy/ Girl is also available.
This position allows students to be an advocate for a subject area supporting learners, curriculum based events and promoting their subject area.  Students volunteer for this position which is supported by subject staff.
  • This position allows students to work with Year 7 forms to help them to settle in to life at IGS and build their confidence and skills. Students also work with Year 8 & 9 and have the opportunity to accompany them during the Challenge & Celebration week. Students volunteer for this position which is supported by subject staff.

As part of the Personal Enrichment programme students are encouraged to participate in voluntary work during their time in the Sixth Form. This has included volunteering in local charity shops, nursing homes, the local medical patients’ council, local primary schools and Brownies. Students have 2 hours a fortnight available to pursue such an experience. There is also the opportunity to be an in-house volunteer whereby students are seconded to a department of their choice to assist in a variety of ways.
Post 16 students support many charities.  Every year we hold a 'charity week' in order to raise money for a charity chosen by the Post 16 students.  Our students sell poppies and support local flag days in Ilkley.  In recent years we have raised an amazing £2919 for Young Minds in 2018, £1,750 for Martin House Children’s Hospice, £1,000 for Yorkshire Air Ambulance and fundraised to hold our own ‘Jubilee’ party for the elderly in our community. More recently students have supported national campaigns for ‘Save the Children’.

The school competes in both area and national sporting competitions in a variety of sports. During the year we hope to offer enrichment opportunities such as yoga or other physical activities to Year 12 students. We also offer students the opportunity to gain a qualification in Sport Leadership. Post 16 is not just about the academic – staying physically fit helps students in their quest for excellent grades and we encourage students to focus on their well-being as part of the Personal Enrichment Programme.

As a Post 16 student you will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of trips - from Iceland and CERN (Philosophy & Science), Geography trips to Cranedale, Skiing in Europe, Exchanges to Coutances, Theatre and Art Trips to London…the choice is enormous.  Our staff are committed to extra-curricular opportunities and Ilkley Grammar School prides itself on developing the whole student both academically and socially.

All students in Year 12/13 are encouraged to undertake work experience.  While there is time allocated for this, students are supported and directed towards appropriate placements.  In recent years students have undertaken work experience at the BBC in London, in Spain and at local hospitals and national companies. The possibilities are endless.

Our A Level Spanish students have been travelling to Spain for a week’s work experience in February for about 8 years.  Every year has been a total success with students returning fired with enthusiasm for their studies and with their love of Spain renewed.

Participants have travelled to a variety of locations in Spain including Gerona, Tarragona, Segovia and more recently Burgos.  Students have had the chance to work in a range of work placements, for example cafes, radio stations, schools, nurseries, record shops, hairdressing salons and restaurants, including the one famous for its roast suckling pig (much visited by Franco!)

The school puts on dance, drama and music productions during the year and Year 12 and 13 always play key roles both front of house and backstage. These are all seen as a major feature of school life.

As well as the traditional school bands, Ilkley Grammar School has a wide range of student driven bands playing a diverse range of rock, ska, funk, acoustic and alternative sounds.  These bands play at Christmas assemblies, leaver’s presentations and more recently at a Concert to raise funds for Children in Need and Martin House Hospice.
