CAR FREE FESTIVAL

Written by: Esme Gutch

Car Free Festival 1

"Organised by Climate Action Ilkley, the first Ilkley Car-Free Festival took place on Sunday 26th September on The Grove in Ilkley to mark Car Free Day and the Great Big Green Week.

Volunteers from IGS from a range of year groups helped to set up the equipment and prepare the street for the day, while some marshalled. There was a wonderful, constructive, and hopeful atmosphere, with many fun events, live music, dance and food, as well as discussions and talks about the environment and future of Ilkley’s relationship with the climate.

The event aimed to raise awareness of the climate crisis, to imagine Ilkley as a car free area, and to create visions of a more environmentally aware town.

Climate Action Ilkley are an active charity, formed in 2018 with passion for working as a community to tackle climate change - a passion which shone through brightly on the day."
