Olicana's Children
Floruit, Floret, Floreat,
Olicana's children cry,
Through good or ill,
God guard thee still,
Our boast through years gone by.
If you can remember singing these words, you probably won't want to admit your age. Up to the 1970s this was the chorus of the School Song, written in 1905 by the headmaster, Mr Atkinson and set to music by one of the teachers, Isaac Hirst.
More recently it has provided the title for a new history of the school, written by former Headteacher Peter Wood to celebrate its 400th anniversary. The book tells the story of how a village school, established through the determination of local men, developed into the modern Specialist School which stands today on Cowpasture Road. It is a story which reflects the history of this part of the Wharfe valley as well as changing social, educational and political priorities. Above all it is a celebration of the lives of local people and of the school which is their lasting memorial.
