Mental Health First Aiders
Student Leadership Team
October 2022
Over the last two weeks the Student Leadership Team group overseeing mental health at IGS have been completing their Mental Health First Aid qualifications.
This is a full accreditation from Mental Health England and is a nationally recognised qualification. The training enables them to recognise signs and symptoms of low mood, depression, suicidal thoughts, self-harm, psychosis and eating disorders in their fellow students. The SLT are trained to listen non-judgementally and sign-post support that might be able to help. The team are now looking to set up peer to peer support groups in school with the support and supervision from key staff.
The SLT now join over 80 members of IGS staff who have this training. Mental Health England aim to have 1:10 people trained nationally to ensure people have someone they can talk to when they might need it. IGS is half-way to achieving this and are committed to strengthening this valuable provision for both our staff and students.
We would like to thank the Student Leadership team and everyone who has so far received this training for their dedication, commitment and compassion in supporting the people who work and study in Ilkley Grammar School.
