Hydrogen Energy & Race cars!

Bradford College Manufacturing Week

Friday 17th October, Y10 and Y11

Twelve pupils from D&T and Engineering came together to visit the Engineering school at Bradford College.

The visit started with an explanation on the use of hydrogen as a vehicle fuel now, plus it’s potential in the future. Hydrogen’s only waste product is water, so this has significant environmental gains over traditional engines and there’s potential to modify the combustion engineer to take hydrogen instead, in the future.

Once we had learned about the fuel we begin using it! Pupils and IGS staff split into teams of four and built racing cars. Each car had its own hydrogen fuel manufacturing cell, which was extracted from distilled water. The fuelling process took around five minutes, but once fuelled the cars whizzed down the track! One team managed three lengths of the track from one single fuel!

The second part of the visit involved a tour of the Engineering department, looking at the various workshops, machinery and projects the pupils at Bradford College have the opportunity to explore. The Bradford Manufacturing Week is an excellent opportunity for pupils across the Bradford district to explore many different Engineering and Manufacturing areas through visits, talks, online lectures and tours of factories. Thank you to Bradford College and the supporting companies, our twelve students certainly enjoyed their morning!
