Y11 CRAVEN COLLEGE TASTER DAY

Monday 30th January 2023

Whilst IGS hosted its own ‘Taster Day’ for prospective Post-16 students, a group of Year 11s attended a bespoke ‘Taster Day’ at Craven College in order to gain an insight into Post-16 courses on-offer as well as explore facilities and meet course tutors. Hosted by Melissa Hodgson, students were given a tour of the campus (including an opportunity to look around their brand-new state-of-the-art equestrian centre) as well as gain a hands-on insight into provision for learning in constructions trades, farm machinery and motor vehicle studies. The occasion was rounded off by a visit to the Three Peaks cafeteria for a delicious lunch!

Students were able to meet industry-specialist course tutors in traditional trades such plumbing, plastering, painting and decorating, plus carpentry and joinery; they were encouraged to explore facilities, ask questions and look at current students’ handiwork. Many of the students in attendance have already submitted course applications, but there was the opportunity to apply on the day, as well as to receive advice about apprenticeship vacancies and future progression routes.

Willis S, a naturally talented agricultural vehicle mechanic, has applied for Craven College’s course in Farm Machinery as a first-step towards gaining a career in Agricultural Engineering.

He felt he gained a lot from the visit “especially speaking to the course tutor who talked me through course content and gave me useful advice about getting an apprenticeship in the future.”

IGS recognises that students require experiences beyond the classroom, enabling them to make informed decisions about their future. Individual college websites contain a wealth of information about vocational courses on offer from level 1 to level 6 (degree-level), as well as Supported Internships; T-Levels and Apprenticeships. They also regularly advertise upcoming Open Days; Taster Days and Campus Tours.

Applications can be made by accessing ‘apply now’ links online and take only a matter of minutes to complete!
