Y13 VISIT TO J CAREY DESIGN

Year 13 Product Designers visited Jonathan Carey Design Ltd in Crosshills on Tuesday 27th September.

The trip followed on from pupils working with Richard and Freya from JCD on the One Sheet Challenge (OSC) furniture brief, where each pupil designed a product to be manufactured from one large sheet of manufactured board. Pupils received individual feedback during JCD’s visits to our workshop, to support their OSC design journey, along with discussion and feedback after their final presentations.

JCD selected the top three designs, where Alfie Lord and Kamesha Thompson both received fantastic feedback for their folding TV table and child’s chair, respectively.

The overall winner was Oliver Mason with his wonderful design of a games table finished in burgundy laminate on a black MDF core.

The intricate top included detailed CNC routing which needed prototyping and testing several times before the ideal quality was achieved, all processes which are directly applicable to the Product Design course.

During the visit to JCD pupils learnt about the commercial design and manufacturing process, reviewing clients concept visuals, how these were transferred to costings and technical designs, working alongside the client at each. Year 13 then walked around the material sample area to view the huge range of material options available, all excellent inspiration for their coursework. They walked around the workshop to see some of the designs coming to life, starting with the raw materials following through to the panel saw, panel edger, CNC machine through to the individual workbenches where products were being processed with hand tools and assembled. Finally, we saw the lacquer shop and packing area, from which products leave the factory to be installed throughout the UK.

Year 13 and Oliver were then presented with the winning piece, which was the full size table! This amazing piece can be seen in L block within the Design & Technology office space, it will also be on display for open evening and we welcome parents to come and view the creative work being produced by our pupils at IGS!
