The Year 7/8 boys team from the 20/21 academic year finished the season on a high representing the White Rose of Yorkshire at the Northern Regional LTA Schools Tennis Finals on Friday 5th November. The team were in the last four of the Northern region, part of the last 16 teams to reach the finals knockout stage! An incredible feat.

Their journey to the finals started on the 28th June 2021 at Harrogate Grammar School where they won 10-0, inspired by the first day of the Wimbledon championships. This was in the preliminary rounds in the Harrogate Division One League where they also faced St. Aidan's School and St. John Fisher School, winning all their matches. The team progressed to the North Yorkshire region knockouts, beating St. Peter's School York 10-2 on a sweltering evening before being gifted a bye in the final after Pocklington School conceded the fixture. This paved the way to the Northern finals.

The venue for the finals was Silksworth Tennis Centre in Sunderland. The day started with the team being drawn against Altrincham Grammar. The game was exhilarating, requiring a sudden death ‘shootout’ with the match tied at 6-6 after the singles and doubles matches. Each match was worth 2 points. Unfortunately, after a great morning session IGS were pipped to the post. The boys then came up against King's Priory School Tynemouth in the third/fourth place playoff. After some superb all-round performances, showing great character, IGS beat King's Priory School 10-2. The boys finished a strong 3rd in the National North Finals and were great representatives for IGS. They were polite, sociable and demonstrated fantastic sportsmanship. They should be very proud of their achievements!
