Y8 EVIL ESTATES WRITING COMPETITION

As part of the current Spy Fiction unit, year 8 are taking part in the English department's new writing competition: Evil Estates Ltd. This is part of the national initiative to get children thinking about how what they learn in the classroom will be useful to them in the workplace later in life. Students are designing a spy villain's lair (shark tank and laser security, as standard) and then using their creative and persuasive writing skills to market this property!

The competition was designed as a fun way to connect pupils creative writing to real world roles, all departments are currently developing these real world links to their subject area. English teacher, Mr Johnston, designed and planned the competition whilst our Careers Leader, Karen Mitchell has been invaluable by liaising with our community partners for their help and support.

Karen says "We are living in a digital revolution providing a constantly evolving workplace. The Careers Team work extensively with all staff, parents and stakeholders striving to equip our students beginning their respective career journey with the skills to be ‘future proof’.  In developing our careers programme, we are proud to have Careers Champions linked to curriculum subjects, David Johnston volunteered to be the English Careers Champion. He created this fantastic competition to make English ‘real’ for students and understand the connection to the world of work and a great example of embedding careers into the curriculum. Thanks David, it was a great idea and competition!"

The judging will be conducted by our fantastic community business partners: Dacre, Son and Hartley. With extra special thanks going to Richard Hare in their Guiseley office.

Watch this space for the winning lair!
