BRONZE DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARD
Y9 PRACTICE EXPEDITION
12th - 13th May 2023
Our Year 9 Duke of Edinburgh participants completed their practice expedition on the 12th and 13th of May. They took part in a supervised walk across the moors and down to the Ben Rhydding playing fields on Friday, camped overnight then embarked on an independent walk on the Saturday, with staff checking at regular intervals. Students had to provide their own food and carry their equipment with them for the full trip.
Here is what a few students had to say about the experience:
“I really enjoyed my practice DofE expedition even though it was very long, and we had to carry our heavy bags. It was fun to discover new places and see new things. Getting over the stiles was very difficult but it was all worth it when reaching Bolton Bridge after starting at the Ben Rhydding pitches on Saturday morning. It was a great way to know what we need to work on and if we need to remember anything else or get rid of a few things for the real expedition.” – Isabelle A
“I really liked doing my practice DofE expedition during the weekend even though we had to carry our heavy bags and kit with us all the way to Bolton Bridge. My favourite parts of the expedition were cooking on the trangias, where we made stir fry, and how we were annoyed every time we saw a stile because we had really wide bags and we kept getting stuck in them every time. The expedition really helped my group be aware of what to expect for the qualifying expedition and not to bring too many vegetables!” – Ella S
The assessed qualifying expedition takes part on the 17th and 18th of June, when students will walk between Burley-in-Wharfedale and Harewood, camping at Bramhope Scout Campsite overnight.
