Y9 BRONZE DUKE OF EDINBURGH

Friday 12th to Saturday 13th May 2023

Groups 1-10

Part of the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award requires undertaking a Practice Expedition.

The groups of seventy Year 9 students will walk from IGS to Ben Rhydding on Friday, then complete more challenging routes on Saturday, camping at the school fields overnight. They will be tasked with navigating themselves while carrying their own food and equipment. This should provide excellent training for their final qualifying expedition in the middle of June.

Food: Students have learnt about suitable food to take on the expedition and will receive training on the first day on how to use a stove safely. They will cook in small groups, working together to make a hot, high-energy meal on the Friday evening. They will also work together to ensure they have a substantial breakfast on Saturday morning, which may include a cooked element. They will need to carry food for lunch on both days and snacks to eat during their walks.

Group kit: School will provide tents, stoves, fuel and survival bags. During previous training sessions students have learnt about group and personal kit. It is the responsibility of students to look after the group kit they borrow.

Mobile phones: All students should carry a mobile phone to use in case of an emergency only. They should not be used for any other reason and should remain switched off during the expedition, which will ensure battery life for use in emergencies.
