CHARITIES WEEK 2019

Charities week started at Ilkley Grammar School in the year 2006.  The vision is to bring our school community together, instil the value of being excellent citizens in our young people, whilst raising money for a range of charity organisations, local, national and international.

This year the students focused on raising money for three incredible charities.

KS3 raised money for Brain Tumour Research and Support Across Yorkshire, more commonly known as BTRS. BTRS is Yorkshire's leading brain tumour charity dedicated to raising funds for life-changing research and patient support. Around 9,000 new cases of primary brain tumours are diagnosed in the UK every year, 12 each week in Yorkshire. They are working to find a cure and provide the best patient and family support network they can. Creativity was showcased in abundance and the efforts of KS3 were rewarded with a total of £2780.84.

KS4 voted to raise money for Cancer Research UK. CRUK  is carrying out groundbreaking research here in our district with the aim of finding a cure for many cancers or better treatment methods improving the life chances of cancer sufferers.

We are so proud of the work our Tutor Groups have put into their fundraising ideas, which include sponsored silences, selling Christmas cards and much more. A key feature was the Christmas raffle where local organisation contributed a range of prizes. A huge thank you to their generosity. The companies that contributed are as follows:

  • Morrisons Skipton
  • Charles Clinkard
  • Pizza Express
  • La Stazione
  • Grove Bookshop
  • Ilkley Cinema
  • Friends of Ham
  • Phillips of Ilkley
  • Dan's Den
  • Clip n Climb
  • Roxy Ballroom Leeds
  • Erica Berry Florist
  • Co-Op Bolton Bride Store
  • Bar26
  • Piccolino Ilkley
  • Martinez Wines
  • Majestic Wine

Student’s hard work was rewarded with fundraising £2717.45. A  special mention must go to year 11 who raised £2040.74, in particular to Ben Harris who raised £150 carrying out a sponsored silence, Danny Thompson who raised money for Young Minds raising £180 and finally to Freddie Gape who raised £360 by dying his hair blonde.

KS5 voted to raise money for Mind, the mental health charity. Mind provide advice and support to empower anyone experiencing a mental health problem.  The charity campaigns to improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding. The total raised was £362.77.

This brings the school total to £5861. Thank you to the local community, parents and carers who once again made this possible. On behalf of the key stage teams and progress leaders, we would like to wish you all a wonderful Christmas and a happy new year.teacher comment
