Fantastic GCSE Results for Ilkley Grammar School!

Students and staff at Ilkley Grammar School are celebrating a fantastic set of GCSE results today, despite the new tougher exams.

In particular, students have excelled in the top grades, including the new Grades 7, 8 and 9 which are the equivalent of A* and A, with more than 1 in 10 students achieving all grades at this level. This, alongside an 83.5% overall ‘pass’ rate for the new ‘standard’ pass of grade 4+ (C grade equivalent), meant that there were happy faces galore at the school today.

In total, over 38% of all GCSE entries were achieved at A*-A/7+ this year – a 3% rise on last year’s IGS results and 17% above this year’s national rate, with a very impressive 9% of all entries achieved at the very top level of 9 - more than double the national rate. Indeed 24% of all grades were at grades 9/8/A*.

Of particular note is Robbie Matthews, who is one of this year’s national elite achievers with a clean sweep of 10 grade 9s/A*s – a feat matched by only 731 other students in the country.

26 other students achieved a full sweep of A+/7+ grades in all of their GCSE qualifications with many examples of incredible individual success.  With 8 or more GCSEs achieved in total by all, top performers include: Danny Leach who received nine grade 9s; Joe Higgitt and Charlie Wilde with eight grade 9s each; Cara Burdon, Dominic Coy, James Barker and William Brookes who gained seven grade 9s apiece and Louis Fielding , Emily Rayland and Jonathan Fisher with six grade 9s each.

The school is equally celebrating the success of a large number of students who have exceeded their targets across the curriculum and who are expected to achieve exceptionally positive ‘Progress 8’ scores which reflect their outstanding achievement in relation to students nationally with a similar academic profile.

According to estimated Progress 8 scores, over 20 students achieved on average two or more grades higher than similar students nationally in every subject studied and have therefore achieved their Personal Best by significantly exceeding their targets.  These include Erin Collier, Thomas Green, Zakariya Yahya, Pedram Habib Zadeh, Morgan Grimshaw, Finlay Grimshaw, Kara Milligan, Olivia Barlow, Amelia Milner, Joe Higgitt, Amber Medway, James Redman, Angel Smith and Jude Brogden.

Helen Williams, Headteacher said, “Given the enhanced content and difficulty of these tougher reformed GCSEs, which have seen the old grades A*-G being largely replaced by 9-1 with grade 9 pitched higher than a previous A*, we are extremely proud of all of our students’ achievements this year.  It has been something of a nail-biting time over the last 24 hours as we waited to see what our students would achieve in these new exams, but once again IGS is celebrating and I would like to thank all students and staff who have worked so hard over these last two years to make this possible, as well as parents for their support. 2018 may have been the dreaded year of reform nationally, but IGS has once again shown that our students are more than ready for the challenge!”

Record numbers of students will now enter sixth form study at IGS in September.
