4. Mobile Phone and Earphones
4.1
Overwhelming research indicates that mobile phone use in school has a detrimental effect on learning, progress, wellbeing, and can cause an increase in bullying.
4.2
As a result, the following rules apply to mobile phone and earphone use at IGS:
- Phones and headphones will need to be on silent and out of sight from 8:25am-3pm (2.35pm on Wednesdays)
- Phones and headphones will be removed from students by staff and taken to one of 4 secure spaces in school for collection at the end of the day
- Students using phones or earphones during the school day will receive a 'phone' behaviour point which will be added to Edulink
- Some identified students (with additional needs, mental health issues, or circumstantial issues) may use designated safe spaces to use their phones
- Some subjects require the use of phones to support NEA work. Use of phones in these subjects will be at the teacher’s discretion
- At social times, students may approach members of staff to be able to discretely use their phone for urgent situations
