8. Safeguarding and Child Protection

At Ilkley Grammar School we are committed to the highest standards of Child Protection and Safeguarding. Our designated safeguarding team ensure that we have:

  • A knowledgeable, well trained and vigilant staff team who understand ‘it could and does happen here’
  • Students who are knowledgeable about how to stay safe, how to manage risk and who to speak to if they, or someone they know, feel unsafe or at risk of harm
  • Clear and robust systems and policies that are underpinned by both local and national best practice
  • Strong partnerships with local stakeholders including the Local Authority, Children’s Social Work Services, Safeguarding Charities and West Yorkshire Police

8.1 Who are the Named Designated Safeguarding Staff?

  • Mr Andy Calvert, Assistant Headteacher, is the Designated Safeguarding Lead and Mr Simon Ford is the Deputy DSL. Mrs Sarah McManus and Mrs Jennifer Johnson are the Designated Safeguarding Officers and Deputy Safeguarding Leads
  • We also have a number of other staff who have received enhanced training in order to support the wider work of the safeguarding and child protection team

8.2 What happens if my child is at risk?

  • Information will be recorded on the secure school systems (CPOMS) and shared with appropriate members of staff. This is most likely to be either a member of the safeguarding team and a member of the pastoral team.
  • Depending on the level of risk, or concern, your child will be spoken to by the most appropriate member of staff. A child’s voice is at the heart of safeguarding practice, and so this will almost always be the first step.
  • Depending on our assessment of risk, or the most appropriate next steps, we will then consider the following actions:
  • Safety planning and support for the child
  • Notify parents and discuss appropriate support
  • Notify or refer to other agencies, such as Children’s Social Work Services and the West Yorkshire Police

8.3 Will parents be notified of all concerns?

  • While we would always look to involve parents in planning to support child protection or safeguarding concerns, particularly where other agencies may become involved, there are times and circumstances where this may not be appropriate

8.4 How do you ensure children know how to stay safe?

  • We have a comprehensive age appropriate PSHE, personal development and PBT programme that is delivered to all year groups, including Sixth Form, and covers all statutory expectations as well as what we consider to be emerging or upcoming priorities
  • Our PSHE programme is complemented by assemblies and form tutor inputs via PBT and is designed to promote key knowledge around how to stay safe and what to do in the event that you or someone you know does not feel safe

8.5 How can my child report concerns?

  • There are many different ways to report concerns around safety including:
  • A philosophy that you can talk to anyone – as every member of staff is trained to respond to, and record, all safeguarding concerns in the same way
  • Speak to any teacher or member of staff
  • Email safeguarding@igs.mlt.co.uk
  • Report via the website here

8.6 Where can I get more information on staying safe?

  • A more detailed summary of Ilkley Grammar School’s work on safeguarding can be found here

8.7 Who can I speak to if I am concerned about my child’s safety?

  • For general concerns, you can speak to a member of your child’s year team. This would include bullying, community-based concerns or general wellbeing issues
  • For more specific or significant concerns, you can ask to speak to a member of the named safeguarding team
  • If you believe a child is at risk of harm you can call Bradford Children’s Social Care on 0800 953 0966 or complete an online referral form here
  • If you believe your child is at immediate risk of harm or a crime has been committed call West Yorkshire Police on 101 or 999 as appropriate.
