CRIMINOLOGY

Curriculum Overview

The purpose of the WJEC Level 3 Applied Certificate in Criminology is to provide students with powerful knowledge of criminal justice through a scientific study of criminal behaviour which includes elements of psychology, law and sociology.

They will gain this powerful knowledge through:

  • The acquisition of knowledge in purposeful contexts linked to the criminal justice system through applied learning.
  • An understanding of how criminology is relevant to many job roles within the criminal justice sector, social and probation work and sociology and psychology so that students are able to make informed decisions about potential future career routes.
  • Supporting students understanding of how the criminal justice system which impacts on their own behaviour and conduct in UK society, becoming responsible and active citizens. It requires students to gain responsibility by considering how their learning impacts on themselves, other individuals, employers, society, and the environment.
  • An understanding of the different theories and explanations for the causes of crime so that students are aware of patterns of criminal behaviour.  This understanding will help develop kindness and respect for individuals.
  • Knowing how to draw objective conclusions from information on criminal cases and therefore gain the knowledge of how to synthesise information from a range of sources.
  • Understand how the media can be used to both help and hinder the criminal justice process.
  • Design an individual campaign for change which develops courage, responsibility, kindness and respect.
  • Gaining skills in critical analysis and evaluation, particularly of investigative process, control and punishment, psychological and sociological theories of crime which will prepare them for future employment and training in the Criminal justice sector, social research and politics.
  • Understand the importance that social policy has on making changes in society so that students can take responsibility and have a positive impact on social reform.
